Set by a fervent Lutheran to the text of the Roman Catholic Mass, the work is universal in its spiritual appeal and its musical scope and is often considered among the greatest creations of the human mind and spirit. By seamlessly combining new compositions with adaptations of earlier movements created over the span of 35 years, Bach illustrates in less than two hours of glorious sound the sum of all musical styles of his day.
