The art of 20th-century creators is in the spotlight during a visit to two of Philadelphia’s outstanding collections led by art historian Ursula Rhen Wolfman.
Begin with a guided tour of the Barnes Foundation’s newest exhibit, Modigliani Up Close, which explores Modigliani’s working methods, materials, and how he created his works. The exhibition is a detailed investigation of the artist’s unique style, casting new light on his practice that brings together important pieces from museum collections.
After a three-course lunch at the Barnes, spend the afternoon at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s newly opened special exhibition, Matisse in the 1930s. A guided tour of the exhibit considers changes in the artist’s work across multiple formats, including easel and decorative painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and the illustrated book.
