In 1791, Pierre L’Enfant envisioned the National Mall as a grand “public walk,” a sweeping promenade at the heart of the capital. But by 1900, his ambitious plan had been largely overlooked and altered. That changed with the influential McMillan Plan of 1902, which reimagined the ceremonial core of Washington, D.C., shaping much of what visitors see on the Mall today.
Take a walking tour through history and design to explore the Mall’s evolution from its earliest conception to its most recent additions. Discover the stories behind the once-planned museum park and the now-vanished railroad station and tracks and the curious reason why the Mall doesn’t align with the compass.
Marvel at a rich tapestry of architectural styles represented by the Smithsonian buildings. Begin with the Gothic Revival Smithsonian Castle, built in 1846 and the first permanent structure on the Mall, and follow the architectural journey to the striking 2016 National Museum of African American History and Culture. Along the way, encounter the exuberant Victorian flair of the Arts and Industries Building and the Beaux Arts grandeur of the National Museum of Natural History.
Continue by comparing the distinct takes on Modernism in buildings such as the Hirshhorn Museum, National Museum of American History, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the African American History and Culture Museum. The tour concludes with a glimpse at the Mall’s newest landmark, the Frank Gehry–designed Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial.
