The Gardener Vallier (detail) by Paul Cézanne, 1906 (National Gallery of Art)

Please Note: This class has rescheduled date (originally November 2 to 16, 2025).

Explore the vibrant and expressive world of Cézanne as you peer into the mindset of the beloved Impressionist and create inspired art, uncovering new layers of artistic possibility each week. As a class, learn about the artist through film, reproductions, and discussion of his process. Use this knowledge to examine the beauty and versatility of sketching and painting with your preferred medium while embracing the essence of Cézanne’s unique style. The instructor brings examples of Cézanne’s work for reference and inspiration. Choose your focus from among figures, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, then embark on an enriching artistic journey tailored to your creative interests. One session of class is conducted in the nearby Smithsonian gardens for a plein air experience. Special instructions for this session are provided in class. Expect to make several artworks during this course.
