The Richmond–Petersburg Campaign was a series of Civil War battles fought around Petersburg, Virginia, from June 1864 to March 1865. More popularly known as the Siege of Petersburg, it was not a classic military siege, but rather nine months of trench warfare waged by Union forces commanded by Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant.
Campers explore the battle through discussions and historical simulations using information from maps, timelines, and museum visits. They create dioramas and fight battles with miniature soldiers, as well as engage in group-strategy games using large geographical maps. Fictional and nonfiction accounts, graphic novels, reference books, and related films and documentaries give campers a grounding in the period’s history.
