1 Oban, Japan, 1716-1837
The Tokugawa period in Japanese history lasted from 1601 to 1867 and was characterized by the oban, a large oval golden plate worth approximately $2,500 today. The oban features ink and carved inscriptions and a stamp to combat currency forgery.
