7/19, 7/20, 7/21, 7/22, and 7/23 (5 sessions total)

Did you know something as simple as a screw is considered a “machine?” Adventurers construct and combine simple machines from recycled and household materials. They discover the engineering design process as they solve daily challenges; investigate levers, pulleys and inclined planes; and exercise their critical thinking skills while building upon every day’s work to fabricate a Rube Goldberg-styled wacky invention. Virtual visits to the Air and Space Museum and digitized patent models at the American Art Museum inspire designs throughout the week.

In grade-appropriate, week-long sessions, participants take a deep dive into the Smithsonian’s collections. These Adventures engage young people with unique content about natural sciences, history, art, and so much more. Weekday sessions explore a variety of Smithsonian topics and include virtual visits to museums, hands-on projects, games, collaborative challenges, and conversations with experts during 2 hours of live, online interaction with a team of experienced instructors.

Multiple Offerings!  This Adventure is also offered at 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM ET.  The same material will be taught in both sessions; please do not register for both.

Registration for this Adventure will close two weeks prior to the first session date.  If you are trying to register after that point, please email us at SummerCamp@si.edu and we will do our best to accommodate your request if space is still available.
