Master basket weaver Lori VanKirk Schue guides students of all levels in creating a beautiful textured basket in a pattern that combines twining and braiding techniques. Students learn how to weave the round spoke basket—a shape reminiscent of pottery from the famous Penland School of Crafts—by measuring and placing reeds to act as foundation for the decorative colored braiding.
The workshop includes discussion about various materials suitable for basket weaving, as well as instruction in preparing materials and working with tools to create this one-of-a-kind piece. Students supply spring-type clothespins, a small straight-nosed garden clipper, and a dish towel. All other materials and shared tools are provided. A $35 supply fee is payable to the instructor.
