"Girl with the Red Hat", ca. 1666, by Johannes Vermeer (National Gallery of Art)

Have you ever wished you could have a Vermeer hanging on the wall of your home? The ideal complement to the upcoming landmark exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting, this course explores the artist’s paintings and the distinctive techniques that you can incorporate into in your own work. Through direct observation of his paintings and hands-on practice in the studio, students create their own Vermeer-like painting as they examine linear perspective, grisaille, and glazing. Learn the mysteries of how this beloved artist created the softly luminous paintings in which he captured moments of quiet beauty in everyday Dutch life.

The course is appropriate for intermediate painters; experience using oil paint is required.
