Please Note: This program has an updated date (originally Oct. 3, 2017).

For Alex Guarnaschelli—whose mother edited the seminal 1997 edition of The Joy of Cooking, which defined the food of the late 20th century—a life in food and cookbooks was almost predestined. Now an accomplished chef and author, she is the executive chef of Butter Restaurant in New York City and appears on numerous Food Network shows, including as a judge on “Chopped” and “Beat Bobby Flay.” She was also the winning contestant in the “Iron Chef America” competition.

In her new cookbook, The Home Cook (Clarkson Potter), Guarnaschelli writes for the way we eat today. For generations raised on vibrant, international flavors and supermarkets stocked with miso paste, harissa, and other bold condiments and ingredients, the book includes recipes to replace their parents’ Chicken Marbella, including Glazed Five-Spice Ribs, Roasted Eggplant Dip with Garlic Butter Naan, Roasted Beef Brisket with Pastrami Rub, Fennel and Orange Salad with Walnut Pesto, Quinoa Allspice Oatmeal Cookies, and Dark Chocolate Rum Pie.

Hear Guarnaschelli, in conversation with Mary Beth Albright of the Washington Post, discuss her career working in restaurants and appearing on the Food Network, and her tips and takes on everything from simple vinaigrettes and roast chicken to birthday cake and cocktails. Albright is a digital host and editor of the Post’s video food coverage.

A pre-signed copy of The Home Cook is included in the ticket price.
