Mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frank Lloyd Wright with a unique overnight visit to New York City. Get insights into his achievements and creative influences as you explore a major exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, experience a tour of the Guggenheim Museum, and view holdings contained in the Wright archives at the Avery Architecture Library of Columbia University. Urban historian Bill Keene leads the tour and provides background on Wright’s life and career, as his well as relationship to New York City and his architectural work there.
An in-depth tour of MoMA’s major Wright retrospective, Frank Lloyd Wright at 150: Unpacking the Archive, offers a look at an ambitious exhibit of 450 works spanning Wright’s career from the 1890s through his death in 1959. The comprehensive show—which includes drawings, scrapbooks, models, furniture, textiles, and films and videos of Wright—centers on objects from the museum’s Frank Lloyd Wright archives and Columbia University’s Avery Architectural Library, some of which are being seen by the public for the first time.
Delve even deeper into the Avery’s Wright holdings as a curator shares some of the Wright collection of more than 67,000 drawings, photographs, and papers housed in the library. The library contains one of the world’s foremost collections on architecture, with more than 600,000 volumes and over 1.5 million drawings and other original materials.
Spend the afternoon at the Guggenheim Museum, designed and built by Wright between 1943 and 1959. During a special tour, examine how the architect redefined how museums are laid out, and created new concepts of how they relate to both the art they contain and to their environment. Learn about the Guggenheim’s history, its construction methods, the most recent renovation completed in 2008, and the challenges of bringing Wright’s complete vision to life in this now-iconic space.
Enjoy lunch at the museum’s art-filled restaurant, The Wright, with food by noted chef Rodolfo Contreras served in a sleek setting by designer Andre Kikoski. There is also ample time to explore the Guggenheim’s extensive collections and visit the museum store.

- Tour departs by bus from the Mayflower Hotel, Connecticut Ave. and DeSales St., NW, with a pickup stop at the DoubleTree Hilton, 15101 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel, Maryland, at approximately 9:10 a.m.

- Singles registering at the double-room rate are paired (on a nonsmoking basis) if possible, but must pay the single-room supplement otherwise.
