Calligraphy by instructor Sushmita Mazumdar
Discover the relationship between the Eastern traditions of Afghanistan and India as you explore calligraphy’s connection to language, literary arts, religion, popular culture, memory, and art.
Sughra Hussainy, a graduate of Turquoise Mountain Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan, teaches traditional elements of Persian and Arabic calligraphy, with texts by Rumi and from the Quran providing the inspiration for artwork. Both verses were part of her life growing up and living in Afghanistan, and they influence her calligraphic art.
Sushmita Mazumdar looks at how the Persian language inspired Urdu poetry in India, popularly found in songs from Bollywood movies. She guides participants in using markers, brush, ink, and other tools in writing lyrics in the Hindi-language Devnagari script as they explore how words become design.

Mazumdar is an artist, writer, educator, and the founder of Studio Pause in Arlington. She works with museums, schools, art centers, and libraries teaching children, families, and seniors how to tell their stories by making them into creative handmade books that share stories of heritage and migration through art.
