This decisive naval battle in the Pacific theater of WWII occurred just six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. Fought almost entirely with aircraft, the Battle of Midway allowed the United States to bring down Japan’s first-line carrier strength and most of its best-trained naval pilots. The American victory effectively ended Japan’s ability to wage war in the Pacific. Campers use miniature soldiers, war games, reference books, documentaries, and detailed models to learn about this pivotal battle. To stimulate ideas for building their own dioramas and terrain board, they spend a day visiting the Smithsonian’s Udvar Hazy Center.
