The U.S. entered war with Spain after the explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. The ensuing Spanish–American war ended Spain’s colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and secured the predominance of the United States in the Caribbean and its ability to pursue strategic and economic interests in Asia. Campers use miniature soldiers, war games, reference books, documentaries, and detailed models to learn about the conflict’s pivotal battles. To stimulate ideas for building their own dioramas and terrain board, they spend a day visiting the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico.
