Fought over the course of 12 hours on September 17, 1862, the Battle of Antietam halted the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North, and ultimately led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Campers use miniature soldiers, war games, reference books, documentaries, and detailed models to learn about this pivotal battle. To stimulate ideas for building their own dioramas and terrain board, they spend a day visiting the historic battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland, experiencing history first-hand.
