Part of Operation Iceberg, the invasion of Okinawa was the last major battle of World War II. Campers learn about the critical role the island played on the Pacific Front through the use of reference books and documentaries. Campers paint miniature soldiers and build dioramas and terrain boards to play strategic war games. They visit the Udvar-Hazy Center and Air and Space Museum to learn about the history of kamikaze warfare, and examine the events that led to Japan’s final surrender—the dropping of the first atomic bombs.
