There are about 17,500 species of butterflies in the world, around 750 of which are represented in the United States. In collaboration with artists from Dance Exchange, campers discover the amazing world of butterflies through visits to the Natural History Museum’s butterfly pavilion and the pollinarium at the National Zoo, where they learn about their life cycle, migration journey, and role in pollination. The young lepidopterists participate in daily movement and dance explorations, create butterfly-themed art projects, and use their new-found knowledge to create a performance piece.
