The art of coiled basketry came to America through slaves who used the aromatic long-bladed grasses found in Southern states to create baskets based on traditional African forms. Master basket weaver Lori VanKirk Schue introduces its history and techniques in a workshop that emphasizes sweet grass and pine-needle crafting. Appropriate for beginners but challenging enough to spark beautiful design ideas, a coiled-basket project is an ideal way to learn about this centuries-old style. All materials are provided. A $35 supply fee is payable to the instructor.
