Tiffany Favrile glass mosaic sampler, ca. 1900 (Haworth Art Gallery)
Tiffany Studios began producing mosaic artwork in the late 1870s, pieces distinctive for their deeply saturated colors and lustrous surfaces. Create your own reproduction of these Gilded Age designs, using a variety of stained glass that mimics the brilliant iridescent Favrile glass developed by Louis Comfort Tiffany.
Your choice of an instructor-supplied Tiffany pattern is the inspiration for a one-square-foot mosaic artwork perfect for home display. After an historical overview of Tiffany mosaics, students are introduced to the nuances of working with stained glass as a mosaic material, including cutting techniques, sourcing, preparation of materials, and fabrication methods. No mosaic or stained glass experience is needed. Returning students may work independently during this session on works of their choice.
A $65 supply fee, payable to instructor at first class, covers design patterns and an ample selection of stained glass, substrate, adhesives, and grout.
