New Volunteer Opportunities Available
At this time, the Volunteer Office is accepting volunteer applications for Office Volunteers. Please see details below. Event Representative opportunities will become available in late 2014, but you are encouraged to submit an application now for future consideration.

Office VolunteerVolunteers for The Smithsonian Associates play a pivotal role in the continued success of our programs by providing dependable service in a variety of ways. Staff members rely on the support of both Office Volunteers and Event Representative Volunteers in all aspects of program and administrative activity.

No particular credential or work experience is required to become an Office Volunteer. However, it is highly desirable that applicants have an interest in The Smithsonian Associates mission as well as a willingness to work with staff, members, and other volunteers.

Prospective volunteers are requested to complete an application. The Office Volunteer Application is available here. For the Event Representative Application, click here. Upon receipt of the application form, you will be contacted to schedule an interview, provided that volunteer assignments are available.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

  • fielding program inquiries from members and the general public
  • assisting in public information and marketing mailings
  • supporting program development
  • helping to publicize our programs by creating targeted emails
  • working on special projects based on experience and interests

Office VolunteerParticipation in the Volunteer Program involves a commitment to serving at least one four-hour shift per week for a minimum of one year. In order to volunteer in the Associates office, you must have daytime availability during the week.

Benefits and privileges that Office Volunteers enjoy are:

  • An SI Photo ID (which identifies volunteers as non-paid staff and may be used to obtain discounts at museums and cultural institutions)
  • Discounts in Smithsonian Museum shops
  • Working within a supportive and welcoming environment

EVENT REPRESENTATIVES

Event Monitor at WorkThe Associates Event Representatives contribute to the successful undertaking of all our programs and represent The Smithsonian Associates and the Smithsonian Institution to the public. Event Representatives typically help with the following:

  • Welcoming arriving participants
  • Selling tickets at the door
  • Distributing handouts
  • Promoting Smithsonian Associates memberships
  • Assisting staff where needed

Event Monitors at WorkEvent Representative Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, although training sessions are held only once a year (typically in the winter). Interviews with Volunteer Office staff are required after completed applications are received and prior to training. Interviews serve to outline Volunteer Program requirements and provide procedural information.

The Event Representatives program is both dynamic and versatile, as well as educationally enriching. Successful Event Represntatives possess the ability to work well with others, have a flexible and congenial personality, and share a strong belief in the mission of The Smithsonian Associates.
