Alexandre Najjar was born in Lebanon in 1967, and the history, culture, and contemporary conflicts of his country provide a theme for much of his work as a novelist, poet, dramatist, and essayist. His most recent book, Kadisha, named for an ancient center of Eastern Christianity, has been called “A beautiful novel in which discovery, history, adventure, spirituality, and passion come together in a journey [through] space and time.” Najjar has served as a member of UNESCO’s commission on Lebanon, and since 1999 has been a counselor to the Lebanese Ministry of Culture. He was named a chevalier in France’s Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2001.
