Cape Verdean singer Maria de Barros celebrates her islands’ joyful musical tradition in songs filled with tales of love and romance. They “are poetic descriptions of real and profound human emotions that are not just felt by Cabo Verdeans, but by the rest of the world,” she says. Born in Senegal and raised in Mauritania (with a sojourn in Rhode Island), de Barros feels her closest tie to Cape Verde, her parents’ birthplace. A move to Los Angeles exposed her to a potpourri of rhythms, from which a love for Latin music grew. With influences that also include Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, France, and Spain, de Barros literally brings a global voice to her music.
