The 7th Annual Smithsonian McGovern Award presented by Senator Hillary Rodham ClintonStephen Ambrose

In this special evening, one of the country's foremost child psychiatrists and authorities on child development, James P. Comer, received the John P. McGovern Behavioral Science Award.

Dr. Comer, the Maurice Falk Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine's Child Study Center, is best known for founding the Comer School Development Program, which promotes the collaboration of parents, educators, and the community to improve social, emotional, and academic outcomes for children. His efforts in support of the healthy development of young people are known internationally.

In this absorbing and insightful lecture, Dr. Comer discusses how the natural family networks and communities that once nurtured children have been greatly weakened by rapid, massive, and pervasive changes in science and technology. Yet the basic needs of children have not changed-the need for protection and support in preparation for becoming constructive participants in the adult world.

Dr. Comer's talk is highlighted by the presentation of the McGovern Award, in recognition of his contributions to furthering our understanding of American family life. The prize and medal come from an endowment by Dr. McGovern, a world-renowned allergist and humanitarian who made a gift to the Smithsonian for this purpose in 1988.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton presented Dr. Comer with the award.

This program was recorded in January, 2004 at the Smithsonian Institution.
