Providing news may be a public service, but it's also a business. Ken Auletta, who has written the "Annals of Communications" column for The New Yorker since 1992, shares his eagle-eyed view on the perpetually uneasy marriage between public service and private business. The picture grows more complicated daily in a media world that includes the Internet, proliferating cable channels, satellite radio, massive organizational consolidation, and plenty of high-profile cases where traditional boundaries-in coverage and in ethics-seem to be softening under business pressures. Auletta and Bradlee discuss the business of news reporting and tackle tough questions from the evening's audience. This program was recorded live at the Smithsonian Institution on January 22, 2004 | ||
