- Smithsonian Scholars in the Schools -

Scholars in the Schools, takes outstanding scholars from the Smithsonian research and curatorial staff into schools to conduct presentations for school-age children across the nation.

The goals of the project are simple—to get the Institution's world-renowned scholars and researchers out of "the nation's attic" and into local communities, where they can share their knowledge and enthusiasm for learning with school children.

A typical Scholars in the Schools program brings three hand-picked Smithsonian scholars to a host community for three days. Advance planning includes a site visit by a program coordinator to meet and work with local educators. These onsite visit are essentisl to plan programs that support the curriculum and to ensure smooth logistical operations.

A few of the many attention-grabbing topics that bring curriculum to life include:

  • Marine Monsters, Real and Unreal
  • A Spacecraft Tour of the Solar System
  • Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Plate Tectonics
  • The Fate of the Tropics

Cost for a Smithsonian Scholars in the Schools program varies--from $3000 to $30,000--depending on the format, size and length of the program.
